Certificate Program in Health Informatics

Get on our email list to be notified when this program is open for enrollment.

The explosion of medical and biological information has made it clear that innovative advances in storing, retrieving and interpreting information are essential for health professionals and scientists. Clinicians can no longer expect to master comprehensively the information in their areas of expertise. Instead, they must increasingly rely upon problem solving strategies and the ability to access systematically the information required for thoughtful patient care.

Additionally, the national movement toward the widespread adoption of interoperable electronic health records has significant implications for the work of nurses and other health professionals who play a critical role in the implementation of clinical information and documentation systems designed to enhance the quality of patient care. The Certificate Program in Health Informatics addresses the growing need for trained health informaticists utilizing an interactive, online format.

Bringing the university to you

UC Davis has educated health professionals in medical and health informatics since 1999 through its innovative, multi-disciplinary master's degree program. This newly-designed Certificate Program in Health Informatics brings the most essential sources of this distinguished program to a broader audience through its distinctive online format. You may choose to complete individual courses or earn a certificate. Courses are interactive and are taught by the same faculty members who teach the master's degree program. If you seek to further your studies, you may apply up to 12 successfully completed units to the degree program, assuming you meet the program entrance requirements.

Learn from the best

This program is a unique, multi-disciplinary collaboration between UC Davis Extension, the School of Medicine, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Engineering. Faculty members are drawn from the Graduate Group in Health Informatics, comprised of nearly 30 faculty members with diverse research interests including bioterrorism surveillance, bioinformatics, ontology development, helath information standards, public health informatics, clinical information systems, data mining, telemedicine, virtual reality security and 3D visualization.

Who benefits

The program is designed especially for clinicians, scientists and other health professionals, including physicians, veterinarians, optometrists, chiropractors, nurses, nurse practitioners and public health professionals. The program may also be appropriate for experienced information specialists who seeks to apply their skills in a health information setting. Prerequisites may apply.
