Specialized Studies Program in Workers' Compensation

Certificate Requirements
Courses may be taken individually or as part of the Specialized Studies Program in Workers' Compensation. Participants are awarded a certificate in Workers' Compensation upon the successful completion of the 9 required units of designated course work. Courses are typically offered in the evenings, to better serve the needs of working professionals. It is possible to complete this program in a year or less. Tuition for the entire Specialized Studies Program in Workers' Compensation is $1,875 to $2,025, depending on when you enroll. The program application fee ($45), textbooks and parking are not included in the tuition fee.

Overview of California Workers' Compensation
3 quarter units academic credit, X449.8. 30 BRN Hours, 30 MCLE Hours.
Learn about the California Workers' Compensation system from the perspective of all parties—injured workers, employers, claims personnel, and medical and legal providers. Gain an understanding of organizational structure, employment, claims process, decision making, temporary and permanent disability benefits, medical treatment and litigation. Examine new legislation and case law affecting workers' compensation benefits.

Managing Disability Programs in the Workplace
3 quarter units academic credit, X439.4. 30 BRN Hours.
Learn to manage disability programs, including the principles and practices involved in returning disabled workers to work. Carefully examine federal and state laws affecting disability management in the workplace.
Emphasis is on development of resources for evaluating programs and gaining skill in techniques for successfully managing disability issues. Expand your knowledge and discover best practices for workplace disability management.

Workers' Compensation Claims Procedures
3 quarter units academic credit, X449.24. 3 BRN Hours, 3 MCLE Hours.
Develop a basic understanding of workers' compensation claims procedures in California. Learn from a workers' compensation claims examiner about the most contested and controversial issues in current California compensation law:
- fraud
- 133a (employer's responsibility to report injuries)
- serious and willful misconduct of the employer
- vocational rehabilitation
- Approved Medical Evaluator (AME)/Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) process
- the treating doctor presumption
- lien claims
- psychiatric claims
